If you file 10 or more information returns, such as 1099s, you must file them electronically. To help with this process, the IRS has created a new, free online portal called the Information Returns Intake System (IRIS) Taxpayer Portal.

IRIS is free, secure, accurate, and requires no special software. Though available to businesses of any size, IRIS may be especially helpful to any small business that currently sends their 1099s to the IRS on paper. The portal allows you to enter data to create Forms 1099 by either keying in the information or uploading a .csv file. This portal allows taxpayers to:

  • Electronically prepare (create, edit, and view) and file Forms 1099 series without software of service provider
  • Download and print the recipient copy of Forms 1099 for distribution to payees
  • Maintain a record of completed, filed and distributed Form 1099
  • File up to 100 forms per submission
  • Participate in the Combined Federal/State Filing Program (CF/SF)
  • Request automatic extensions and
  • File certain corrected information returns.

If you would like to use the Taxpayer Portal, the IRS provides the following guidance:

External users will validate their identities using the latest authentication process prior to completing the IRIS Application for Transmitter Control Code (TCC). The IRIS Application for TCC is available on www.irs.gov/iris.

  1. Go to www.irs.gov/iris
  2. Follow instructions under Get Started
  3. Click on the Apply for an IRIS TCC button
  4. Sign in or create an account to begin the application process (you don’t need to create an account if you already have one)
  5. Complete and submit an IRIS Application for Transmitter Control Code (TCC)
  6. Once the application is in Complete status and TCCs have been issued, access the Taxpayer Portal to submit information returns

Allow up to 45 calendar days for application processing. You may check the status of your application and TCC(s) on your Application Summary page.

If you want to participate in the IRS CF/SF Program, you must select the option and give consent for the IRS to disclose data to the participating states during the IRIS TCC Application process. Refer to the CF/SF Program section for more information.

As always, should you have any questions regarding IRIS or any other tax issues, please reach out to our team at [email protected].
